Music and Games Can Go on for Middle Schoolers at Journey School

Assistance League of Capistrano Valley Funds Essential Music Program

For middle schoolers at Journey the music and games will continue, thanks to $3,000 and $1500 Links to Learning program grants from the Assistance League of Capistrano Valley.

Bass recorders, cellos, hand drums and ukuleles were on the wish list for 6th, 7th and 8th graders looking to expand on their musical abilities through an ensemble class teaching students collaboration, teamwork while building self-esteem and self-confidence.

“Robust instruction in music prepares students to be engaged, thoughtful citizens of the world,” says Diana Corbo, Music Director for Journey School. “Through practicing an ensemble piece, children learn the art of compromise, by working together and sharing responsibility.”

Check presented to Games Specialist, Joy Halverson.

The Links to Learning program was started by the Assistance League of Capistrano Valley in 2000 and provides grants to middle schools for learning enrichment programs within the Capistrano Unified School District.

Competing against 84 other applicants, Journey was awarded $3,000 to fund the purchase of instruments along with audio equipment for their music classroom. Overall the grant will directly affect almost 200 students.  The Assistance League also awarded Journey $1500 for middle school games equipment.

“We are just thrilled to receive this generous gift,” says Shaheer Faltas, Journey School principal. “This grant definitely puts us ahead of the curve, but as the only Waldorf-inspired public charter school in Orange County, we are in need of much more, so we’re continually striving to uncover every opportunity that will allow us to fund as many programs such as this one for our students.”

The 2013-14 program will be monitored by the specialty teachers and all reflections on its success will be documented by the students and shared with the entire student body in performances towards the end of the school year.
