Music Grant

NEWSFLASH:  Journey School’s in the hunt for $50K—current national ranking is #20

Journey School is in the hunt for the $50,000 Clorox Power a Bright Future grant. Our current national ranking is #20 out of 400.  The immediate goal is to break into the TOP 10 by Saturday and the TOP 5 by Thanksgiving.

WHAT? We will buy new instruments; create a performance venue worthy of our students’ talent; and, provide more teacher support for the children.

HOW?  We need your persistent help and creativity in getting out the vote, both within and especially beyond, the school community.  Here are 5 ways you can help:

  1. 1.   Vote for Journey Music EVERY DAY via text, starting now. Send to 95248 with the message 2579pbf. To be clear, the school code is 2579pbf and the # you text is 95248. Please text once every 24 hours through 12/19/12.
  2. 2.   Vote for Journey Music EVERY DAY online too.  Just visit Clorox Power a Bright Future grant, register, and vote. Please vote online once every 24 hours through 12/19/12. Click on the “x” at the upper right hand corner in the registration box if you do not want to use Facebook to register—it will allow you to enter your information manually. Please do not vote for the ‘Playground entry’ as the judges will decide that contest. Servers are slammed in the mornings, so you may want to wait until folks on the East Coast have gone to work or bed.
  3. Recruit anyone 13 or older to vote.  Please leverage your social networks on-line, at school and at work.
  4. Use these promotion kits to help you get out the vote.  They are so easy to use.
  5. Believe we can win, put out the effort, and have no regrets! “Help is only help if it arrives when needed.”

WHY?   In most public schools, the few music programs that still exist have been gutted by budget cuts and a narrowed instructional focus.  These ‘survivors’ are usually treated as stand-alone, extracurricular activities with little or no connection to core curriculum. At Journey School, the first parent-initiated public charter in Orange County, music is deeply integrated into the academic program. Music imbues math, history, science, language arts, and civics lessons with a soulful beauty that brings these subjects to life. Each day at Journey is a woven composition of knowledge and the arts, which literally sings through the campus.

Starting in Kindergarten, every student, in and throughout each grade, hones their singing voices with increasingly intricate melodies and learns a musical instrument – from the pentatonic flute, diatonic soprano recorder, violin, ukulele, alto and tenor recorders, to ultimately study a reed instrument or the acoustic guitar in 8th grade.
