High School Trends
Often people ask, “So, where do Journey School students attend high school and how are they doing?” On average, Journey graduates mostly attend the following schools in these approximate percentages (depending on the year):
- 40% attend their local high school
- 20% attend San Juan Hills High School
- Requires an Open Enrollment application to be submitted
- 20% attend the Orange County High School of the Arts
- 20% attend private schools including Sage Hill and J Serra
Anecedotally, we know that the vast majority of Journey School students do very well in high school and college. However, we recognize and embrace the need for a thorough and objective Alumni study, which is now being launched. We aim to publish this study in the spring of 2013 to identify trends, strengths, and needs in reliable ways. Our goal is to disseminate this information by June 30, 2013.
Reflections on the San Juan Hills High School Open House
As noted above, increasing numbers of Journey School graduates now attend San Juan Hills High School. An impressive Open House for incoming students and families took place this past weekend. Some highlights are described below:
- Approximately 10 enthusiastic and current Journey 8th graders were reunited with about 1 dozen graduates now attending the school. Although I was only on campus for a few minutes, it was heartwarming to see our alumni embrace the current 8th graders with open arms as older buddies—just as they did while attending our school.
- The staff members there speak very highly of our graduates. There is a special appreciation for Journey students’ upright character, enthusiasm for learning, willingness to work hard, and their artistic, athletic, and academic capabilities.
- Many of our alumni were chosen to speak on stage, represent clubs and teams, and to discuss the academic rigor of the school. Additionally, it seems that more than 75% of our alumni now carry over a 3.0 GPA while enrolling in rigorous courses and participating in many extra-curricular activities, including:
- Theatre
- Choir
- Cheer
- Volleyball
- Basketball
- Football
- Track and Field
- Student Government
- And, so much more
- 8th grade former peers as older buddies.
- Connor Shaw (class of 2010) was even selected to speak on stage for the Basketball program while Emily Lichty (class of 2012) was just named STALLION of the Month for embodying the ideals of the high school.
We are so proud of our current and former students and we look forward to sharing more good news in the coming weeks and months.
